| If elected, what would be your top two or three priorities and what steps would you take to implement them The top issues District 28 faces are unemployment and underemployment, along with the foreclosure epidemic. District 28 in the last census of 2000 was faced with over 10% percent unemployment while NYC employment percentage was 4.4% given the current economic situation; District 28 faces severe underemployment and unemployment. These also exacerbates the already fever pitch foreclosure crisis in our community, which is referred to as ground zero for foreclosures in Queens. District 28 ranks as the district with the most amount of foreclosures in Queens. When elected we intend to create a Community Center in our District which will provide the residents of the district employment opportunities, training and educational resources for skills needed in order to acquire jobs, particular training for certain trades which could be learned in a relatively short amount of time. This would also help mitigate the foreclosures in the community by helping the residents who lost jobs acquire new ones, especially in these volatile economic times. As far as foreclosures, the majority of the community is not aware of the options available to them and are not taking full advantage of all the support that is available. From Loan Modifications to the recent moratorium which was placed on foreclosured homes the residents need to be able to receive updated information which is understandable, real, and effective. When elected I will put together a plan to gather all the tools which could benefits homeowners who are facing foreclosure, provide a clear understanding of the option provided and make sure we keep homeowners up to date on the pending legislation and/or programs which can benefits the homeowner. We intend on educating homeowners who are facing foreclosure by reaching out to every homeowner with in our community who are faced with these unfortunate circumstances. |

| Last Sunday marked the first Sunday after the first full moon of the Hindu calendar. The Hindu festival of Holi is the festival of color, welcoming of the spring, and the triumph of good over evil. Richmond Hill is the host to this West Indian tradition, which happens to be the largest of its kind in all of North America. The heavily Guyanese and Trinidadian community dance in celebration as they welcome their new year. Community Activist and City Council front runner in District 28 in Queens, Lynn Nunes, has been a long time supporter of the parade. Walking along side the Grand Marshalls this year, Mr. Nunes gladly held up the Happy Holi banner. “Thanks to the HPFC and the great people in our community, this tradition has been upheld for twenty years”, said Nunes, “the spirits are high as family and friends paint each other with dye and powder; it is a truly memorable experience”. |
